Track 1 | County Line

From Rusty’s notebook
County LineJust past sunrise, the welcome sign slips behind him. He listens to the wind through the cracked window, waiting for some difference he can feel.
He has been picturing a man somewhere up ahead who is easier to live with. Someone who can stay. The mile markers give him something to count while he waits to become that man.
At the gas stop, two men lean against a rusted fence. He gives them a nod. Even with strangers, he knows how to keep an encounter short, how to be polite and already leaving.
By the next stretch of road, the distance has begun to feel familiar. There are things he has left unsaid, and crossing into another county has done nothing to answer for them. He can hear that now in the ordinary hum of the tires.
Another mile marker.
The same wind coming in.
