Chapter III

A crack in the windshield splits the horizon before sunrise.

Rust Between the Lines opens with an engine running and another town left behind. In this third chapter of Rusty Notebooks, county lines offer fresh distances, but the same man arrives beneath each buzzing sign.

Confrontation gives way to loneliness. Under a tin roof, with rain finding the seams, he remembers a kitchen and a voice that spoke his name without anger. He begins to admit why he left: staying would have meant answering for himself.

In his own departures, he recognizes his father’s silence. Then he begins to speak for himself. He was the one who turned the handle, chose the distance, and left others watching. Saying it plainly offers no forgiveness, but he stays with the admission.

Morning spreads across the fields. A phone rests beside him, the familiar number still undialed. He leaves it within reach and takes the next turn deliberately.
